ABOUT

THE

PROJECT

Located in the Slums of Korogocho in Nairobi, Kenya, the Grapesyard Organization is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that aims to help orphans and vulnerable children and give them child protection, education, nutrition and more. They have students from kindergarten up to those in 8th grade, and as of April 21, 2022, they had 1,373 students. While it first started as a school, the Grapesyard Organization has expanded to other programs to help cater to children in areas that are economically challenged.

Here at The Grapesyard Project, we try and help the Grapesyard Organization to the best of our abilities by doing various things such as raising money to create a basketball court or sending books. This is especially important due to the day-to-day struggles the children face, whether it be within their own families or communities. It gives them opportunities that they otherwise wouldn't have and allows them to enjoy life more and develop other skills, such as better communication or leadership abilities.

ABOUT THE AREA (Korogocho)

Korogocho has a high population density of 150,000-200,000 people within a distance of 1.5 km squared. It is located next to the Dandora Dumpsite, one of the biggest unregulated landfill sites in Africa and any solid waste generated by Nairobi, usually around 850 tonnes daily, is sent there. Further, the area has historically been a settlement for people whose slums have been destroyed and have been inhabited by poverty-stricken people as a result.
