The Grapesyard Project’s Initiative: Infrastructure Repair Project

Updated: Oct 27, 2024

The Grapesyard school, which serves 1400 students, including 400 sponsored students, is currently facing dire infrastructure problems due to heavy rainfall that began in October 2023. Two critical rooms, the food store and the ICT classroom (also known as the Zane Ritchie Computer laboratory), have suffered significant damage to the roofs, endangering children’s lives and hindering educational activities.

The deteriorated food store jeopardizes the school feeding program by causing food spoilage and risking aflatoxin contamination, threatening children’s health with potential liver damage and stunted growth. Additionally, the ICT classroom, which is also used for online reproductive health learning, becomes unusable, and its persistent dampness causes the children to contract common colds. Furthermore, the downpour had destroyed the main water pipes, which have cut off the school’s fresh water supply for the past month, forcing reliance on expensive private water vending bowsers and straining their limited financial resources. To address these issues, the school is seeking funds to replace leaking iron sheets, rotten roof timber, ceiling boards, and repainting the affected rooms. The estimated budget for these repairs is approximately 106,900 Kenyan Shillings (~$1,147 CAD).

This fundraiser aims to promote a functional learning classroom and create a safe food storage space. Potential donors can note that all their donations, no matter the size, will directly enhance the safety, health, and education of the Grapesyard school’s community, making their support crucial and deeply valued. We would greatly appreciate your consideration and any support you can provide on this project.
